The hunger games

Whenever I think about the system of the world we live in, what comes to my mind is the series book: The hunger games. I read the series a couple of years ago. At the time, I thought I had nothing I can relate to the dystopian world of the setting. But now it comes clear that the book is an allegory to the system we have in hand.

The story is about a sixteen years old girl named Kattiness Everdeen who happened to live in the distant future of what is now America. The country was in control of these people who were called the "capitals" who lived in the main city called the "capitol". The capitals governed the twelve districts the country had. And every year they prepare this cruel game "The hunger games" where kids from the twelve districts come to survive in a certain simulated arena and kill each other to be champions. Kattiness joined the seventy-fourth hunger games by volunteering in the place of her little sister and she was met by this other contestant: Peeta who saved her life in the past.

The cruelty of the game is the drama of the book. Contestants died for all kinds of reasons in the game.

You may ask how this is related to the world system we have, and here is how. Just like the games we have this fabricated arena of expectations to rank people based on how much they put in the pile. We kill each other to live up to the "status quo". Our currency, our grading system, and our social classes are all fabricated. They are so irrelevant to the purpose were created for. And yet, we live and die for all those fake concepts and murder each other along the way.

I remember when Peeta said in the book, "I want to die as myself... Only I keep wishing I could think of a way to show the capital they don't own me. That I am more than just a piece in their games." Ever since my eyes got opened to see the world for what it truly is, his wish had been mine. How do you show that you are more than the amount of money you own? How do you make the world see that the average matter?
